We must all vigorously seek out truth, regardless if it fits our beliefs or makes us feel uncomfortable. Truth, reality and fact are not negotiable or subject to varied opinion. It is what navigates and guides our obligation to self and others. The absence of truth is extremely dangerous. If we do not accept truth and it does not matter, then we can be persuaded to do things without personal, relational or societal implications, such as use an effective treatment for cancer or diabetes, or to go to war over weapons of mass destruction that do not exist. Equally, we could deny the reality of a family member’s major depressive diagnosis, a partner’s infidelity, the African slave trade or the Holocaust. The truth has and will always matter. And more importantly, it must matter!
